Snyder(Truman's Secretary of the Treasury, 1946-1953)sold at Sotheby's on December 10, 2010John W. Snyder 's close friendship with Harry S. Truman began in 1928 when Truman was a County Judge. They served together in the U.S. Army Reserves after World War I. Harry S. Truman was Colonel of Field Artillery, United States Army Reserve Corps. Lieutenant Colonel John W. Snyder was in Harry Truman's Missouri Regiment, the 381st Field Artillery, 102nd Division.I n 1931, Snyder entered government service, working in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in the "insolvency division." His duties were, essentially, to attempt to rehabilitate banks that had gone bust during the Depression. He was tasked to monitor eight banks in the St. Louis, Missouri, area. Having achieved notable results in this effort, Snyder was named by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to be the head of the St. Louis branch of the Federal Loan Agency of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) in 1937.After he served for a time in this post, the Roosevelt administration asked him to come to Washington DC as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the RFC, a post that brought him into frequent contact with former army buddy Truman, who was now a Senator from Missouri. Snyder had a broad background in banking and business when he was appointed by President Truman as Federal Loan Administrator (1945), Director, Office of Mobilization and Reconversion (1945-1946), and Secretary of the Treasury (1946-1953). Of the 76 Secretaries of the Treasury, from Alexander Hamilton to Jack Lew, only 6 served longer than John W.
