The authentic signature is ON THE BOOK ITSELF, and not on a signature plate or something. It means the book was actually on the President's hands. b) Harry Truman was Vice President to the greatest President Franklin Roosevelt. Harry Truman himself turned out to be a great President, and is always ranked on the top 10 as one of the Best Presidents. c) Volume I deals with the consequences of FDR's death and how the presidency was thrust upon Vice President Harry Truman. In his own words, it was as if heaven had fallen on his head. It deals with the ending of WWII and the beginning of the Cold War. Volume II deals with the last four years of his presidency. This great piece of Presidential literature is a remarkably personal look at a President after he was catapulted into the White House and on to the hot seat. Truman had only been Vice President for a few months. Truman writes about the heated Cold War including the Korean War, and the firing of General Douglas Macarthur for insubordination . Truman also discusses key political issues of the era. Mr. Citizen begins with his return to Independence and his attempt to, once again, be plain old Mr. Citizen and his gradual realization that that was not possible. He continued to write about events in his retirement, his assessment of Adlai Stevenson, who he tried so hard to get into the White House, his view of history, what to do with former Presidents, and his duty to teach from his experience and other topics. He was the president in command of the Marshal Plan. He was the first President to preside over the Cold War and lead America as a superpower. He was the President during the Korean War. He was the President who won re-election even when everyone else was predicting his downfall. The Chicago Tribune even published that his opponent had defeated him in the election when actually he ended up winning. Remember "Dewey Defeats Truman"? He was the greatest Vice President to be President, and at such a difficult time. He was the only President to command the use of the atom bomb.
