Massachusetts Breweries History: Hampden-Harvard Breweries In 1963, the management of Piel Bros. decided to sell the company, and it was acquired by Associated Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan. They operated a chain of regional breweries, namely Jacob Schmidt (St. Paul, Minnesota), Sterling Brewers (Evansville, Indiana), Drewry's (with plants in Chicago, Illinois and South Bend, Indiana) and Hampden-Harvard Breweries (Willimasett, Massachusetts). Piel Bros. was operated as a subsidiary of Drewry's and Hampden-Harvard Brewery as a subsidiary of Piel Bros. Associated. In 1971, Associated sold all of their breweries (with the exception of the Piel Bros plant in Brooklyn and the Hampton-Harvard plant in Willimasett, Massachusetts) to G. Heileman Brewing Company. In March 1973, a newly formed company, Tomarch, Inc. bought Piel Bros. from Associated including the Hampton-Harvard Breweries Willimasett plant. For a short period of time the Hampton-Harvard Breweries Willimasett brewery continued to operate, but then it was shut down.
