This folded letter has a mostly complete strike of a New Haven Ct. CDS and a very nice stamp. The cover is complete and was carefully cut open around the seal. It is very clean and has virtually no wear. There is one horizontal file fold which is well away from the stamp and postmark. The stamp is touched on the upper right and close in the middle of the bottom, but has ample to large margins elsewhere, including part of the stamp above. The only visible flaws are 2 teenie tears in the left edge, either side of the bottom of the E in the postmark which was folded back, creasing the margin in between the tears and 2 razor cuts. One of those follows the left frame line from the top edge and is 3mm long, the other is near the bottom right and is about 1mm long. The stamp is position 89L2e which has 2 lines recut in the upper left triangle and are almost completely in view on this stamp. The stamp has very rich orange brown color. The letter is date lined Watertown, Sept. 2, 1851, is about the inclusion of checks for payment of stock purchases and inquires what prices more can be obtained for. It is signed by John DeForest. This could be the american author (John W. DeForest), or it could be his father (John H. DeForest), but since the middle initial isn't here, it's impossible for me to know which. I do feel sure it's one of the two. read more
