The Heart of the Antarctic - being the story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 by Ernest Shackleton published by Heinemann 1910.This is the story of the "Farthest South" expedition, told by its leader. After enduring biting winds, short rations and crevasse-ridden glaciers for over a year, Shackleton's party faced a desperate forced march to return to their ship, The Nimrod, or face being marooned on the ice. This is the first "popular" edition in a single volume, the first edition was in printed in two volumes the previous year. This includes many black and white photos and diagrams and four colour plates. The book has some wear to the edges of the boards and spine end, inside there is the original owner's name and slight discolouration to the end-papers, the fold out map is missing from the back of the book.
