The Singer 431G is the mother of all vintage sewing machines. It has everything - removable flat bed with fold down extension, free arm, built-in accessory storage in the removable bed, a huge variety of built-in stitches, plus the fact that it's all metal and gear driven - you just can't find a better built, more versatile machine anywhere! If I had to choose just one machine to keep, this would be the one. It's been completely serviced, stitches like a dream, and is excellent condition to boot. This is a machine that will last forever and look stylish doing it. These machines are rather hard to find in the US as they were made in Germany and the people who have them don't like to part with them. There are no belts to change like those of the Featherweight 221, no plastic gears to break, and no computer problems like those of the new sewing machines. This machine will hold its value for years to come and outlast ANY new machine on the market today. The 431G has an internal metal camstack to make decorative fashion stitches. To choose which stitch you want to use, simply turn the knobs on the front of the machine (the inner knob pulls out to turn and the outer knob pushes in to turn). There are 10 options on one side and 8 on the other, which are used in combination to provide nearly 80 different stitch designs. In addition, a "special" setting is used with the included set of black fashion disks that pop into the top for additional designs. The top panel flips up to show you some of the possible patterns and is where the fashion disks are inserted (all discs from #1 through #5 are included - Note that Singer made many more Fashion Discs but only 1-5 are needed for this machine - the rest of the patterns are already built-in). This is the world's first automatic sewing machine with a slant needle, making it easy to see where you're going and what you're doing. It's also gear driven, which provides very smooth sewing, no slipping or stalling and no need to change a belt - ever. Other Features include: Built-in eye-level threading chart - no need to dig through the manual, it's right there in front of you. Drop-in bobbin - easy to change bobbins, no fumbling around under the machine. Over 80 Built-in decorative stitches - even more possible with the included stitch cams.
