For sale is a fine example of the German-made Heinzmann electric bicycle conversion kit. This is one of the very rare 800 Watt, 30MPH (50km/h) versions. These $1,200 systems don't come up for resale much, so this is going to make someones' day. The motor specification is 451RPM, which on a 26" wheel is 36MPH theoretical. Actual speed when fitted to my mountain bike was 31mph. Read on for details. Included are: 1) The absolutely bulletproof Heinzmann hub motor laced into a 26" mountain bike rear wheel. This version is good for 800W and 421RPM at 36V, with reports of people switching to 48V to get even more power. Don't go to 48V - it would be insane. 2) Heinzmann twist-grip throttle 3) Heinzmann 36V NiCad battery pack with key switch, motor control board, and state of charge indicator 4) Heinzmann rear bicycle rack with space for the battery pack 5) Two keys 6) Sachs 7-speed road cassette 7) A set of spokes designed to lace the Heinzmann motor into a 20" wheel. These have never been used. If you are familiar with bicycle maintenance, you can convert your mountain bike into a high-speed electric bike in 2-3 hours. You can convert back in the same amount of time. The steps are: 1) Remove a handlebar grip and replace with the twist grip throttle 2) Fit the rear rack to the bike and then slip the battery into the rack 3) Replace your rear wheel with the Heinzmann wheel, adjusting chain length and alignment as necessary 4) Plug the twist grip into the battery and plug the motor into the battery The hub motor is threaded to accept a standard gear cassette. Currently attached (and included in the sale) is a Sachs 7-speed road cassette. With this setup you can pedal the bicycle (with the motor freewheeling), use the electric motor by itself, or - best of all - pedal and use the motor as a booster. The details: 1) This is a Heinzmann - not a chinese copy. The motor will probably outlast your bike. 2) This is the high-speed, low torque version. If you don't want to pedal at all, you should purchase a different motor. This is designed to be used as a "booster". In use, the motor "feels" like another (rather powerful) rider helping you pedal; power comes on smoothly and gently and then keeps coming on as you increase speed. While you never feel a big push of power, the end result is quite thrilling - I found it trivial to beat cars from a dead stop at stoplights up to 30MPH and I found that I could keep riding at 30MPH for as long as I wanted, as long as the road was fairly level, just by pedaling rather lazily. Stop pedaling and you can maintain high speed on level ground, but you'll slow quickly if you hit a hill. 3) A 30+MPH electric bicycle might be considered a motorcycle in your area. Double-check your local laws if you are concerned about it. You don't have to go 30MPH - it has a variable throttle - but this motor is best above 10MPH. 4) Speed will depend on tires, aerodynamics, your weight etc. I got 31MPH but you may get more or less. I guarantee that the motor is the one in the photos but I can know how fast it will drive your bike. Free advice: 1) 30MPH on a bicycle is scary unless you have good brakes. Make sure that you do. 2) I recommend a suspension seatpost - it makes the ride much more comfortable. 3) You will want big fat slick or semi-slick tires with at least 80PSI to get the best speed. 4) I recommend changing your gearing to a big road double chainring up front. Mountain gearing is too low for these speeds. 5) The battery pack consists of 30 large (D size?) NiCad batteries. A LiPo battery swap would be a great upgrade - less weight is always a good thing on a bicycle. Heinzmann will sell you their batteries but I'd prefer to break out the soldering gun and buy a hobby pack like a Turnigy from Hobbyking. Condition and Guarantee: Everything worked perfectly when I retired this system from my bike.
