Hell's Canyon Petrified Wood is considered to be sequoia. It was found along the Snake River near the Oregon/Idaho border in an area that is now underwater, flooded after a dam was constructed.Due to the rarity and exotic herringbone pattern, it is highly sought after. The holes were created by a fungus in the tree. During the process of petrification the edges of these areas became crytalized. The zig zag, herringbone pattern creates a 3D effect and makes beautiful cabochons. This piece measures 5" long by 1.75" wide and is approximately 1/4" thick. It weighs 50 grams.A fine lapidary saw was used to cut this slice thus it feels very smooth.Photos were taken both wet and dry.
