Over 50 years later, Service Station Gems bought all they had and, to our knowledge, none of this beautiful wood exists anywhere else. We were fortunate enough to be able to obtain a small quantity of this gorgeous petrified wood at Quartzsite in 2011 and are pleased to be able to offer it to our customers.We were also informed that the holes, called "Pecky Pocket Rot" (dry rot), formed in the dead trees while they were still standing, long before they were petrified. During the petrifaction process the holes accumulated minerals. Each hole is a little druzy geode, either filled or outlined with quartz crystals and/or opal.The herringbone name comes from the pattern of zigzag lines giving the rock surface a 3-D wavy appearance. It is an extremely rare and highly sought after variety of petrified wood and the chances of seeing anymore discovered is highly unlikely.The rock polishes well and we have cut read more
