This eagle first of all is the first graven image of a living creature ever struck on a Jewish coin. It is possibly representative of the Golden Eagle that was temporarily placed above the entrance to the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Others believe it may have been copied from the reverse of Greek silver coins in circulation in the ancient Holy Land. Herod I the Great, 40-4 BC, bronze lepton of 11.7 mm, 0.69 grams. Obverse: Eagle, wings closed, standing right. Reverse: Single cornucopia. Reference: Hendin-1190. A bold example of this historic coin.
