This is a beautiful Hess # 42 straight razor that was made in Solingen Germany. It is in near new condition with a 7/16 mirror finish, gold washed, spike point blade. Note that this blade is made of stainless steel and frozen tempered by the deep freezing process. Razors made from this process are most usually called Inox. This deep freezing process is called cryogenic hardening, at temperatures approximately 80 degrees below zero, and the outcome of this method of tempering assures a blade with an extra sharp and longer lasting cutting edge than plain carbon steel blades. It is said that deep frozen razors shave gentler, smoother, cleaner and glide as smooth as velvet over the skin. Frozen tempered razors only have to be honed once or twice a year. They also are much easier to take care of since they have great rust resistance compared to plain carbon steel blades. Since this blade is a 7/16 it makes it an ideal razor for shaving in the hard to get at places like the upper lip under the nose, and trimming a moustache and beard.This razor shows no prior use. It opens and closes snug and smooth on the pivot pin and perfectly centered between the handles. The very ornate cracked ice, pearlex type, 3 pin handles are in near new condition.
