Amagnificent Georgian silver tablespoon by Hester Bateman, one of Britain’s most renowned silversmiths. It is 20.8cms long (approx. 8.2 inches) and weighs 53 grams. The spoon is clearly hallmarked with the maker’s mark, and the London assay office mark. It is dated 1791 and is in excellent condition. The engravings on the finial read M T, with I E below, and below that, the date 1790, which incidentally is the year that Hester Bateman retired. There is a most attractive Bright Cut cartouche decoration around this inscription and along the entire length of the handle. The spoon is in excellent condition, both front and back, no dents, and very smooth round the edge of the bowl. There are some minute surface abrasions in the bowl of the spoon caused by use and by cleaning, but considering it is 220 years old it has been extremely well cared-for through the years.
