I Most Orange River quartz crystals have heamatite colouring inside the crystal, this can be in the form of a phantom or occure just beneath the surface of the crystal. Hematite gives a wide variety of colours: yellow (rare), orange (commin), black (commin), red - different shades of red (also becoming rare these days), and everything in between. Green chlorite colouration occures sporadically, but is very rare as well. All pieces listed in this store has been hand picked and selected from a vast quantity of material. Only the best pieces with regards to form, lustre, colour and most important damage free. The most remarkable feature of Orange River Quartz is that it was formed in different stages. Original quartz crystal growth is always covered by a secondary quartz layer of higher or lower quality than the original crystals. This can be seen clearly as heamatite colouration usually forms the border between these two stages. Some pieces reveal up to five different growing stages. The Orange River pegmatite belt w all these quartz crystal specimens are mined is situated along the border of South Africa and Namibia, ranging from Vioolsdrif in the West up to Riemvasmaak near Kakamas in the East, covering the area on both sides of the river for approximately 5 km inland.
