Hinchliffe Stadium Paterson NJ Negro Lg Black Football Description : A black and white postcard, circa 1940s, of venerable Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey showing a football game in progress. Built in 1932 and also known as City Stadium, Hinchliffe Stadium has a historic niche in American sports stadium history as it was one of the few stadiums home to a number of professional black baseball and football teams, including the New York Black Yankees baseball team of the Negro Leagues, the New York Cubans of the Negro Leagues, black semi-pro football teams, as well as the Paterson Panthers professional football team, and others. Larry Doby, Josh Gibson, Martin DiHigo, Satchel Paige, and many others played on this field in the 1930s and 1940s. The stadium is currently on the State and National Register of Historic Places. It sits in a state of overgrown disrepair and preservation and restoration efforts are being explored.
