This is a SPIKE from the hull of the US BRIG Flagship NIAGARA . Size is approx. 8 1/4" long by 1" wide. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Captain of the U.S. Brig Niagara.A truly unique piece routinely removed during regular maintenance of the hull. It probably dates back to the major rebuild dating back to 1988.Condition: Used, rusty, much patina. Everything you want in a spike! The battle was closely contested for hours, and Perry's flagship Lawrence was reduced to a defenseless wreck. He then transferred to Niagara and sailed directly into the British line, firing broadsides and forcing the British to surrender. After the battle, Perry sent a famous dispatch to U.S. General William Henry Harrison that read, "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."
