HISTORICAL DISSTON & SON 1871 VINTAGE No.7 SAW I have sold thousands of antique tools on eBay during the past 14 years with 100% positive feedback. It is a saw with a brass medallion featured on the Distonian Institute website as manufactured from 1860 - 1864. As it has the early Henry Disston Medallion with flanking stars. Yet it also has the 1865 etch with Disston & Son. Thus this saw dates from 1865 when Hamilton returned from the Civil War and officially joined his father in running the family business. Henry Disston needed to use up the remaining medallions with just his name on it and this was done in 1865 only. It is rare when you can pinpoint an antique 148 years old to an exact year of manufacture. Hamilton Disston worked in the Disston factory learning the saw business before the war. He went off to fight in the war against his father’s objections. Hamilton insisted in joining the war effort and convinced many Disston employees to do so also. Thus, Henry helped outfit his son and workers during this war. Upon his return Hamilton joined the family business as a partner. To see more on this topic and the Disston Saw Company see my article at - /page19.php . This is a straight 28” large rip saw with 7-1/4” width at the heel. It has 5ppi rip teeth with smaller 6ppi at toe end for easier starting as done at factory. The saw plate has been lightly cleaned preserving the dark patina of this valuable antique. It has a clear etch with a clean saw plate with no rust or pitting. The aged solid large beech wood handle has a great aged look to it with original finish. It has the original brass split nuts and sunk in medallion, with split screws that are crisp and not all buggered up. In fact they still have the original sanding marks in a horizontal orientation as was done at the factory when finishing the handle. Thus these saw-nuts have never been tightened are in perfect crisp condition. The saw plate has never been off the handle. I bet there are some markings under there as I often find initials and model number marks stamped in at the factory. I left the original patina intact and hand polished with butchers wax to preserve the wood. This is a piece of history that you become the new caretaker of – preserving its perfection for future generations to study. I guarantee you will like this saw 100% or full money back.
