It is a saw with a brass medallion featured on the Distonian Institute website as manufactured from 1860 - 1864. As it has the early Henry Disston Medallion with flanking stars. Yet it also has the 1865 etch with Disston & Son. Thus this saw dates from 1865 when Hamilton returned from the Civil War and officially joined his father in running the family business. Henry Disston needed to use up the remaining medallions with just his name on it and this was done in 1865 only. It is rare when you can pinpoint an antique 148 years old to an exact year of manufacture. Hamilton Disston worked in the Disston factory learning the saw business before the war. He went off to fight in the war against his father’s objections. Hamilton insisted in joining the war effort and convinced many Disston employees to do so also.
