American Historical Staffordshire Child's Transferware Plate FRANKLIN'S MAXIMS ~ GOOD CONSCIENCE Staffordshire England c. 1850 This early historical Staffordshire cup plate measures just 4 1/4" in diameter. Black transfer print on a creamy earthenware blank with pearlware glaze, the center features a wreath of lily-of-the-valley and a bow, surrounding the motto: Conscience is a terror to the wicked but a comfort to good men. The detailing is impeccable, a work of art on ceramic, with wisdom that is as timely today as when it was penned by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century as part of his book “The Way to Wealth: Industry and Frugality” with subtitles that included Industry Idleness and Waste. The plate was made the Staffordshire region of England from early to mid-19th century. It is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. A transfer smudge and other typical imperfections original to the making and adding to the naive charm of the plate. Rim wear consistent with age. The design is elegant and striking. It will make a wonderful addition to any collection of transferware maxims mugs and plates, or any collection of early American AAFA history. We have also listed a companion plate with a maxim about betrayal of trust. An amazing set, which we are offering individually. We are pleased to offer FREE domestic read more
