Her family was among the first residents of Collinsville in the 1940s. She graduated from Fieldale High School in 1952, and received a two-year Secretarial Certificate from Radford College in 1954. She has taken classes in creative writing at Patrick Henry Community College and independent study courses on writing and genealogy. Avis Turner has worked as a secretary, library aide, and bookmobile librarian. She published The Carter Family Tree in 1984. Her articles have been published in magazines and books including Grit, Women’s Household, Virginia Microfilm News, Patrick County Heritage Books, and the Henry County Virginia Heritage Book. This is her third book. Her first In The Land Where Fairies Cried Tears of Stone detailed her grandmother’s life in the Fairy Stone Park Area of Patrick and Henry Counties in Virginia.
