THE HOBBIT or There and Back Again J.R.R. Tolkein [1st Edition] - 3rd Impression GEORGE ALLEN AND UNWIN: LONDON 1942 ***** DESCRIPTION: HARDBACK, GREEN BOARDS, 310 pages, adverts. CONDITION: VERY GOOD+: Book's cover is in good condition with some minor wear - most notably a tiny bit of loss at the bottom of the front joint (see photo) - and a few marks to the rear cover. Otherwise bright and clean. Binding secure with a very slight roll. Map endpapers totally intact. No ink names. No foxing. Wartime paper clean. An very presentable copy of a scarce, early issue. Apparently some of the stock was lost due to a German bombing raid which hit the warehouse in which it was stocked. It was assumed for a long time that this issue was produced without a dustjacket (part of the effort to save paper during WWII) but there is at least one record of jacketed copy. With a much anticipated film on the horizon it is likely that demand for such early editions will increase.
