I sent this picture in to Archie Taylor the President of & Steve Alpert Past President, Auction Manager, QD Examiner of The Original Hobo Nickel Society The coin HAS NOT BEEN APPRISED YOU GET WHAT YOU SEE IN THE PICTURE this is part of an Email From Steve Alpert (Hi Mary - You found an old original hobo nickel at the yard sale. It is just of average quality workmanship) this is from Archie Taylor (Mary, you have a fine HOBO NICKEL. The picture is great with the detail of carving and depth of cuts) The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The nickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.
