Holt Howard Nixon Mugs In 1972, when Richard Nixon was still President, Holt Howard produced these mugs just before the Watergate scandal broke. However, they were deemed to be in contravention of an existing U.S. Treasury Deparment law which prohibited the use of the image of US currency for any reason. Under this law, and probaby with some prodding from the White House, these mugs were declared illegal and ordered to be destroyed. Sometime in 1973 the US Secret Service, on orders from the Treasury Department, went into the Hold Howard warehouses in San Rafael, California and Stamford , Connecticut and confiscated and destroyed all of the mugs present. A small shipment from Japan was already in transit to Holt Howard's Canadian distributor. They became instant collectibles because of the controversy and subsequent Watergate scandal. Newspapers of the day ran headlines such as: "Mugs with Nixon Likeness Busted", "US Seizes Mugs With Picture Of Nixon On It" and Tempest Over a Coffee Mug". We are offering here one ultra-rare U.S. "survivor" from the Holt Howard warehouse in San Rafael, California, and one from the Canadian shipment. They have the appropriate markings, "1972" for the ULTRA-RARE U.S. "survivor" and "1974" for the Canadian version, as documented in Dworkin. Both are in excellent condition.
