I only accept PayPal. **************************** As a Doll Artisan, you spend an incredible amount of time and money to make your creations as perfect as you can….just the right shade of eyes, that special fabric and trim, the perfect little nose….then the crowning glory that is one on the most prominent features and first noticed ….the hair. Why use an inferior hair-product when such beautiful mohair is available? Sometimes we use a product with no idea what it really is…..Mohair is the hair from an Angora Goat, like wool comes from sheep. (just a side-note….there are also Angora rabbits, very fluffy and cute, used often by hand-spinners). The difference is that mohair is actually hair, like your hair. Most Angora goats are white, there are occasional colored goats (like a black sheep) but they are somewhat uncommon. White mohair takes dyes beautifully, and although it is naturally curly, you can make it curlier (like ringlets). My mohair has lots of natural shine, and when dyed, has highlights…not flat monotone like some types of mohair. Much of the mohair I am now seeing has been combed and brushed so harshly that the natural curl is all but destroyed. I raised Angora Goats for about 15 years. I sold exclusively to doll makers either at doll shows on the west coast…Anaheim, San Francisco Bay Area to Portland and east to Salt Lake City, as well as mail order. My mohair was used by hobbyist as well as internationally known doll artisans. We sold our farm a few years ago…I found all my goats good homes and I then liquidated most of my mohair, but saved some thinking I would finally have some time to make my own creations but have now realized it’s just not going to happen! There are several different types of Mohair...the mohair you use for your dolls ain't your grandma's mohair sweater type of mohair.... Kid mohair is the softest, curliest mohair you can get. As the goat becomes older, the mohair gets straighter and coarser…which is fine depending upon the end use of the mohair. For a baby doll, fairies, whimsical elves, mermaids, forest nymphs, etc, many doll artisans like the finer, wispy, curlier kid mohair. You can often find kid mohair in natural ringlets that are unbelievable, It is difficult to raise kid mohair to a very long length as it tends to matt and become impossibly tangled because of the softness. If I didn’t raise and shear the goats myself, I could swear the kid mohair had been snipped from the head of an angel. Yearling mohair is one of the most popular….still quite curly and soft, but the curls are not quite as intense and a bit more manageable.
