Presented today is this serene and beautiful Hopi Kachina doll, depicting the Snow Maiden. Carved by Verlan Fred, she is shown kneeling and playing a gourd resonator, as she would be doing during a Kachina Dance. The figure is 10 inches tall, although if she were standing she would be about 14 inches tall. The work is delicate and understated, and in particular the mocassined feet are gracefully and realistically depicted. Verlon, who lives in Bacavi, has always carved with a sense of quiet spirituality. He comes from a large family of respected carvers, and his father was the kikmongwi (mayor) of Bacavi. He has spent his life immersed in the faithful expression of Kachina art. The piece is a very traditional Late Action Style doll, and would look great in any Kachina doll collection. The classic pose is dramatic, and gives a sense of movement to surrounding standing Kachina dolls. Whether your tastes are vintage or contemporary, this beautiful Kachina doll is a perfect fit.
