2 OLD H Alger Titles CODMAN CRUISE & SHIFTING FOR SELF Description: Shifting for Himself and Charlie Codman's Cruise both have thrilled readers for many years. These two books by Horatio Alger Jr. (1832-1899) were published by A.L. Burt Co. in the early 20th C. The pair have identical decorated covers and designs for their spines. The stories by Alger in his book series were intended for youth and most often include a youthful hero who overcomes hardship without letting struggle warp an innocent, engaging mind or produce a strike-back mentality. These two books show some wear on the covers as sun fading, grime and open edges at the corners and front edge (2" on Shifting) . Charlie Codman's Cruise has a loose page with torn edges. Both have clean, unmarked pages. T is a break to the binding at the title page or page after. The pages at the edges are dust-darkened. Both are a pleasure to hold and read.
