Ms. Drake first appeared in the 1947 anthology Dark of the Moon and after approaching the publishing house founder, August Derleth, A Hornbook for Witches was subsequently released in 1950 as Drake’s first collection of poems. Drake self-funded the publication keeping an estimated 300 books as her share of the investment, leaving only 253 copies to be officially distributed by Arkham House. Drake went on to release another collection of poetry and a number of short-fiction works, including This Tilting Dust (1955) and Mop-Head (1954). While working on a third collection of poetry to be titled Multiple Clay, Drake passed away in Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1964. Many would come to know Drake’s works through a spoken-word release by Caedmon Audio in 1976 where Vincent Price read four poems from the collection. A Hornbook for Witches remains to this day as one of the rarest books to ever be published by Arkham House.Horror and witchcraft poems, perfect for Halloween!
