One of the firstbooks of its kind, the publication collected the interiors photography of Horst P. Horstsecond edition of sorts--arrives from Abrams. Around That Time: Horst at Home inVogue goesbeyond its predecessor's 13 portfolios to collect all of Horst and Lawford's collaborations for thefirst time."I stumbled upon it while doing research for a story, and I fell in love with it instantly," says Ivan Shaw of the original volume. Shaw is now the corporate photography director of Condé Nast Art and Archive Development--but up until recently he was Vogue 's photo director of nearly two decades. "I read it cover to cover," he remembers. "I just thought, Wow, wouldn't it be wonderful to bring this book back to life for a new generation?"And that is exactly what Shaw did--along with Vogue 's Hamish Bowles , who wrote the foreword for the new tome. ("It was so much about decorating," Shaw notes, "so it needed Hamish Bowles!") The globe-trotting Vogue International Editor at Large quickly agreed, emailing Shaw that the original iteration was "his bible" when he was young.The duo got to work. But as significant as this oeuvre is, for many, it is surprising to hear about Horst outside the context of fashion photography. Horst, who was born in Germany in 1906, is still best known for his prewar black-and-white images, which he shot for the magazine mainly while living in Paris. But Horst's history has always been steeped in interiors--he moved to Paris initially to intern for Le Corbusier, a job that he hated, and, as Shaw says, "was more of a prison in his mind, I think."by happenstance. After a creatively stagnant period during the 1950s, Horst's friend--the indomitable Diana Vreeland--took the helm at Vogue . "Vreeland sent Horst and Lawford on a trip around the world," Shaw explains poignantly. "They went to visit all the great homes and families for what was then the magazine's Fashions and Living section." But bear in mind, it is no small feat for a photographer to so effortlessly pivot to working with color and a new subject type. "It really speaks to his brilliance and his range," Shaw notes. "There are very few photographers who could make a jump like that, especially so late in their careers--Horst was in his 60s and 70s by this time!"For Shaw, half the fun of this project clearly came from diving into Horst's archive, which held plenty of hidden gems. One of the best discoveries was an unpublished image of the young designer Carolina Herrera --from when the home of her then--future husband's family was shot for the magazine. "She was Reinaldo's fiancée at the time," Shaw explains, "so it was considered inappropriate for her to appear in the issue before they were married. But there it was, this extraordinary portrait, sitting in an envelope that probably hadn't been looked at in 50 years. It was a very special moment--and a real piece of history."As gifted of a portraitist as Horst was, this book is as much about interiors as it is about photography. And if Horst and Lawford's work from this era can be encapsulated in any one way, it's as the precursor to the Living section that you find here on today.
