BOLTWOODITE HOT Rare Uranium Species Boltwoodite Chemical Formula : HKUO 2SiO 4·1.5H 2O Arandis, Swakopmund District, Erongo Region, SOUTH WEST AFRICA (now known as NAMIBIA ) Ex. Fred d’Esopo Collection Measures: 2 cm x 1.2 cm x .6 cm Shipping Weight: 3 ounces This is an eye catching tiny specimen of a rare uranium mineral. The vivid Yellow BOLTWOODITE formed as a compact radiating spray on one side. This is an excellent display of these acicular (needle-like) crystals~! Some crystals are terminated~! Boltwoodite is a rare hydrated potassium uranium silicate. As you can see in our photos, the Yellow Boltwoodite is highly visible on this piece~! 3 of these photos were taken through our microscope~! These intriguing opaque Yellow crystals formed on CALCITE, which definitely emphasizes their beauty. Specimens of Boltwoodite are hard to come by. Any (and every) specimen of this rare uranium species is a welcome sight~! This specimen is from a very old find at this classic locale. (Note: One of the ways to tell if you have an older specimen from Namibia is if the original label has the country listed as South West Africa (SWA), which is the former name for Namibia .) Fred’s label had SWA on the label. If you win this rare mineral and like to “play” with your specimens, you could carefully etch away the Calcite with a bit of mild acid. Personally, I like this small little uranium sample as is~!! Specimens of this material have never been common. In the last decade, this uranium species has become even harder to find. Even tiny showy pieces like this one are a special find~! This specimen of rare Boltwoodite will be a spectacular micromount or a fine thumbnail in your collection~! This specimen came from the Fred d’Esopo Collection: Fred was an advanced upstate New York collector with a very large collection set up like a museum. We felt privileged that Fred selected us to purchase it in 2000. Although he is now deceased, we will remember him by his quiet demeanor and special love of minerals. He was the driving force behind the Utica Mineral Club, which is now defunct. We have fond memories of dipping corn-on-the-cob in mugs of beer on Saturday nights after the Utica Club Show~!! William Pinch, also from New York , provided Fred with many specimens. Fred’s collection evolved through the years from self-collected road-side trips to the fluorescents at Franklin New Jersey, to gorgeous aesthetic specimens, then later to unusual and the hard-to-find rare species. At one time, like many collectors, Fred decided he needed to eliminate some duplicates in his collection, so he tried selling and trading minerals. These specimens have a different label, “D’ESOPO MINERALS”. Some were orange labels and some white labels.
