is a very rare 10 ½" wide heavy Sample Service Plate made for the Hotel Peabody located in Memphis, Tennessee. The plate is cobalt blue and was made by World Wide Line and is clearly marked twice as a sample. T is an inscription on the back of the plate that reads "For Sample Purposes Exclusively - Further Reproduction or Sale of This Design is Prohibited." It is marked sample 9629 and also reads "Created Exclusively For Our Friends in Limited Edition." Also on the back is a circular white factory sample sticker that reads "World Wide Line" - "Style 462 - 1 Color" - "ASI 9829". This appears to even possibly make the plate the Sample's sample. The Plate features a very detailed image of the large majestic hotel on the front and reads above the hotel "Again and Forever, The South's Grand Hotel" and has "The Peabody" in script on the bottom. And...t is also the famous Peabody Ducks on the front, which have been coming down the elevator to swim in the hotel's opulent fountains since 1940. I am not sure when this plate was made, but it is a sample for the Peabody. The gold overglaze is in excellent condition with only light wear to the very thin outer boarder. It has no cracks, no chips, and is in near mint condition. This is the truly the only plate I have ever seen like this! Historically, The Peabody, which has been completely renovated and is one of the most famous Hotel's in the Midwest, was opened in 1925 and had 625 rooms--all with Baths, Showers, and Ice Water. The hotel was advertised as the Finest Hotel in the South and is still advertised as such today! The Peabody was owned by the Midwest Hotel Companies, who also owned The Gayoso and the Chisca (which were also located in Memphis Tennessee). This is only the second plate I have ever seen, which I believe t was only just a few of these made for the hotel's executives as samples. Again, this is only the second plate I have ever seen or had ever. When the Peabody was built, people arriving in Memphis to stay at the Peabody would primarily arrive by the Rock Island, Louisville & Nashville, Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis, Iron Mountain, Southern, or the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley (later the Illinois Central). The hotel was very close to Union Station. A great addition to your Memphis, Peabody, Camel, Advertising, or Hotel collection and it is ready to display. As a geographical note, Memphis is located near Forest Hill, Capleville, Brownville, Covington, Hopewell, Germantown, Cordova, Fisherville, Eads, Arlington, Hickory With, Warren, Bartlett, Ellendale, Brunswick, Bolton, Rosemark, Millington, Cuba, Locke, Dixonville, Drummonds, Munford, Atoka, Kerrville, and is located on the Mississippi River. The digital images do not show the original item that well. The actual item looks much better than what the digital images shows it as.
