This Howard Pierce Pair of Elephants comes from a significant Howard Pierce collection that has been cabinet kept for many years. These elephants as a pair are rare. It is their (mama and baby) pairing that really make them and give them a substantial presence with such charm and character. The high gloss grey glaze elephants exhibit Howard Pierce's incredible talent of artistically interpreting animals in his ceramic art, while capturing their essence. The rich hues and gradations of grey glaze give the pieces such artistry and character. They exhibit Howard Pierce's great ability with glazing as an art. The pair of elephants have a wonderful mid-century modern feel to them. This (mama and baby) pairing of elephants is rare and does not become available often. Howard Pierce was a highly talented artist and a one-man studio potter who started his work in the 1940's and continued up until his death in 1994. He is recognized as one of the greats having worked with William Manker, and his work strongly influenced California Pottery. His work has always been highly collected and has become more so over the last few years, particularly as pottery experts and collectors discover the depth and quality of his talent, work, and contributions to the arts. The pair of elephants have a substantial presence to them while capturing such character and charm. The mama elephant is 6-1/2" high to the tip of the trunk, and the baby is 4-1/2" high. They are marked Howard Pierce. T are no chips, cracks, or damage. What's that mouse doing in the last picture?!?! It snuck in, and it is being included for free with the pair of elephants. It was such a cute mouse, I couldn't resist including it in the listing. Besides, how else would you control a pair of mama and baby elephants! The mouse is not marked, but it is Howard Pierce. A fine addition to any studio pottery, mid-century modern, Eames era, or California Pottery collection. Offered at a reasonable reserve for the collector. California residents must pay 8.25% California sales tax.
