Antique American Silver Souvenir Spoon with a figural handle featuring a Union Civil War Soldier standing on a Corinthian column labeled "US", the gilt bowl stamped with an eagle clutching a sabre above crossed cannons and cannonballs; made by the Howard Sterling Co. of Providence RI. Monogramed with conjoined "NL" above "*93*" in the bowl. This spoon was pictured in the Souvenir Spoons of America series published in 1891 by the Jewelers Circular Publishing Co. and reprinted in Anton Hardt Souvenir Spoons of the 90's (New York, 1962) on page 50; this reference notes that the spoon was conceived by the retail jeweler Anderton, Eberhardt & Co. of Dayton OH as a souvenir for the Soldier's Home of Dayton and was patterned after a local monument. I note that the eagle's head did not show up well in my picture but it is very well defined on the actual spoon. Spoon is 5 7/8 inches long. I will be out of town 20-22 January so please e-mail any questions by Thursday.
