In the year 1524 a Jörg Schnaitter was called, pierprew (Brewer) on the property in the lion pit 17. Löwenbräu was mentioned for the first time 1746 in the Taxbook for Beer of Munich. The lion in the name originates from a fresco "Daniel in the lion pit“ in the Brewing-house mentioned from that 17. Century. By his order the Brothers Rank built in 1882/83 the Löwenbräukeller after the plans of professor Albert Schmidt on the property of the brewery at the Nymphenburger Road. The solemn opening of the Löwenbräukellers was on 14 June 1883. 1886 the lion as brand name was registered. Around the turn of the century Löwenbräu was the largest brewery, however strongly export dependent. [ edit ] Between the World Wars 1921 the brewery fused with the Union Brewery Schülein & Cie. Joseph Schülein a Jew became member of the supervisory board of the brewery. On 28 December 1921 retroactively Munich Bürgerbräu AG fused with the Löwenbräu AG bawards to 1 September 1920. Numerous further real estate arrived into the possession of the brewery, among other things the Bürgerbräukeller . Also the supervisory board of the AG was extended, Wilhelm von Finck one of the Owners of Bürgerbräu became a member. 1927 Löwenbräu brewed for the first time Weissbier/Wheatbeer.
