HELL’S CANYON HERRINGBONE PETRIFIED WOOD ROUGH CHUNK (From Idaho) LENGTH: 229 mm WIDTH: 76 mm THICKNESS: 55 mm TOTAL WEIGHT: 2 Pounds 4.2 Ounces/1,000+ Grams PLEASE READ OUR NEW PAYMENT & SHIPPING POLICIES BELOW ABOUT HELL’S CANYON HERRINGBONE PETRIFIED WOOD We were told that in the early 1950’s a rock hound family collected it from the area where Hell’s Canyon Dam was later built (now underwater). Over 50 years later, Service Station Gems bought all they had and, to our knowledge, none of this beautiful wood exists anywhere else. We were fortunate enough to be able to obtain a small quantity of this gorgeous petrified wood at Quartzsite this past year (2011) and are pleased to be able to offer it to our customers. We were also informed that the holes, called “Pecky Pocket Rot” (dry rot), formed in the dead trees while they were still standing, long before they were petrified. During the petrifaction process the holes accumulated minerals. Each hole is a little druzy geode, either filled or outlined with quartz crystals and/or opal. The herringbone name comes from the pattern of zigzag lines giving the rock surface a 3-D wavy appearance. It is an extremely rare and highly sought after variety of petrified wood and the chances of seeing anymore discovered is highly unlikely. The rock polishes well and we have cut wonderful cabochons, working with the quartz crystal lined vugs and utilizing them within the cabochon design. ABOUT OUR PHOTOGRAPHY All of our rough material is wet when photographed so the patterns can be seen more easily. No enhancement has been done on the pictures to change the color or hue of this item. As with any of nature’s creation there may be fractures and or pits in any rock. Please view the photos closely before bidding. Use the enlarge feature to view the item close up. SHIPPING We will gladly hold an open box for a maximum of 7 days (unless other arrangements have been made with us) so you can combine items. Payment and shipping charges must be paid within that period. Combined shipping discounts will only be effective when all items are paid "when ready to ship" to comply with the one day shipping policy. Your choice of shipping is calculated according to your zip code. We will combine shipping in flat rate boxes anywhere in the U.S. for all we can carefully pack in the box.
