Emery, H.G. & Brewster, K.G.(Ed's): The New Century Dictionary of the English Language / Based on matter selected from the original Century Dictionary and entirely rewritten, with the addition of a great deal of new material, and containing the great mass of words and phrases in ordinary use. 12,000 quotations. 4,000 pictorial illustrations. Supplement of synonyms and antonyms. New York: Standard Reference Works Publishing Co., (1957); later edition. Large Quarto, 11" x 8-1/4" x 5"; viii + 2,408pp. Bound in deep burgundy cloth, with elaborate strapwork in red and peacock blue, and floral decorations in gilt to front cover and spine; title centered in a white cartouche. Red and gilt marbled endpapers. With 15 full-color plates throughout the text. The binding is put together like a binder, with the covers attached to the fold-over hinges of the spine. The contents are held together with aluminum bolts through the gutters. It looks very much as if the contents were released over a period of time, in 15 installments, with a color plate at the beginning of each gathering. A stunning and unusual production! We've not seen one like this before ~ and in such clean unused condition too! Winning bidder please help us out here with extra shipping: THIS BOOK WEIGHS 11 POUNDS: $7.50 SHIPPING in USA.
