Description: At a whopping 13" width (handle to handle) and 7 1/2" in height the white ironstone punch bowl presented in this auction is the perfect vessel to quench your guests' thirst these upcoming holidays! It has embossed decoration in the ever so popular "Ceres" pattern, which was named by its makers, Elsmore and Forster, after the goddess of agriculture (the Roman counterpart of Greek goddess Demetra).Easily recognizeable by the band of embossed husks, the melon ribs that adorn the body as well as the cable motif around the opening and base rims, this bowl is certainly a E & F piece, out of the popular line that set the trend for wheat patterns in the 1860s. An additional detail that bespeaks the quality of potting at the Tunstall, Staffordshire works are the sophisticated handles, mimicking corn husks. All these elements combined justify an attribution to Elsmore and Forster since the piece itself does not bear any marks whatsoever except for an impressed "31" on the underside of its base. Condition: The punch bowl is in very good condition. I have already talked about the quality of potting and the fluidity of the design lines. Beautiful shiny glaze with slight overall crazing commensurate with age and a light blueish tinge to it make this piece sparkle in the sunlight! No cracks or hairlines nor any stains or other discolorations read more
