Please wait for my many photos to download and please make sure you take a look at all the pictures, particularly those not taken with a flash so you can see how the bottle actually looks in person. Extremely rare frosted art glass bottle by the Erasmic perfume company - dates anywhere from the late 19th century to first quarter of the 20th century. My best guess is that it is, more specifically, from that transitional period between the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, as it shows design elements from both. I feel certain that it is a French made bottle, not only because of the typically French Art Nouveau design of tendrils and leaves (the latter along the base) but more importantly because of the style of text in the one medallion that reads "ERASMIC AROMATIC ROMAN BATH SALTS". Guaranteed authentic and antique or your money refunded in full on its return. This incredible bottle is enormous and could certainly be used as a vase - it stands a whopping 9.5" tall, with its widest diameter of 5.75". There are four panels, three of which show have an incredible Roman gladiator design, the fourth of which has the aforementioned text. My gut feeling is that it is a Lalique piece, though I know that unsigned pieces are rare. He was designing bottles for Erasmic around that time period and on doing some searches I found a bottle made for another company that had similar medallions. Even the horses on this piece are reminiscent of his Five Horses Automotive Mascot. I have tried contacting the Erasmic company (now Lever Brothers) to see if they have a record of designs made by Lalique, but have not heard back from them. Some research is certainly in order. Though very difficult to see, there are two seams on the bottle and, if you really closely scan the piece with a loupe, you can see that there was once gold paint on certain areas within the medallions. A few air bubbles throughout. I know very little about glass but to my eye, it looks as if there was a pontil mark on the bottom that was sanded down? The medallions were painted with some sort of dark green stain which is in pretty rough shape (I'm sure this will need some restoration, although the paint/stain has the advantage of proving just how old this piece is, exhibiting age related crazing, crustiness and losses). It once covered the tendrils as well, but that is mostly gone and that which remains can barely be seen. Underneath this darker green is the same light green frosted glass. Unfortunately the lid is missing, but otherwise it is in quite remarkable condition considering its age, with no cracks or chips (though the odd minor scratch and of course, some surface wear - it could also use a cleaning - I left it as found).
