( Priority Mail weighs in at almost $50 ! ) ****** PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE PHOTOS FOR DETAILS AS THEY CAN TELL YOU MORE THAN I CAN ABOUT THIS ITEM. This was obtained by me nine years ago, & has been both a mystery & a great conversation piece for all those years, but all attempts to research & identify its "heritage" have yielded zero results. Collectors & friends who have examined it have had all types of ideas / theories ranging from a mold to make novelty German WW1 helmets in plastic, to a mold for stamping lightweight German helmets for movie props, to a mold for stamping German lightweight fire /Police helmets ( which I DON'T think so !). One thing we all seem to agree on: this is probably one half of what is assumed to be a two part mold method, & it looks post-WW2 from its design & quality construction. I am selling this as EXACTLY what I bought it for... a novel display & conversation piece, & DO NOT guarantee it can be put into "helmet production", & is sold strictly "as is". The entire assembly is MASSIVE.... it weighs roughly 20 - 25 pounds by my estimate, & is made of solid, 1/2 inch thick DENSE aluminum material. It measures out at approximately 14 inches in width, X 25 inches in length, X 8 inches in height. The actual helmet shape is meticulously sculpted into the metal & finished smoothly, & around the rear skirt area on the exterior is a "dam" of some type ( or perhaps something to assist in aligning it) made of curved hardwood with a "red lead" type of coating on it. T are two slight "lozenze" shapes ( one on each side of the helmet... roughly w decals would be on an actual helmet), & their exact purpose is unknown to me. The interior of the helmet shape ( the underside of the mold) is perfectly machined & smoothed, as is the entire bottom base around the helmet shape. The entire assembly does have some scratches, slight "dings", & tiny pock marks & t from being knocked around & used. The only markings I can find on the entire piece are shown in one of the photos below, & they are in the dome of the inside helmet bowl : " N Z" - actually two "N"'s, one upright, & one sideways next to it. Then in the back of the helmet bowl are the markings incised into the metal: " N-43 , D I E ( with the I being taller than the D & E. Well, whatever this may be, it sure is unusual, heavy as hell, & would make an unequalled doorstop !!
