On offer is plate 33 (New Zealand) from the lithograph edition of Alexander Keith Johnston's very scarce National Atlas of Historical, Commercial, and Political Geography, first published in 1843. This is a magnificent, double-page map printed on very heavy stock with original hand-coloring in outline and a decorative piano key border. It is huge -- measuring 65cm by 53cm (25.5in by 21in); one of the largest maps to appear in a commercial atlas in the mid-19th century, in fact -- and depicts both main islands, along with insets of Port Nicholson and Port Cooper and Port Levy "by Capt. W. M. Smith." Geographical notes are scattered across the map. T is some light staining in the margins that is quite common for this map and a small tear in the left margin well outside the map image, but otherwise the sheet is in wonderful shape for its age.The cartographer behind this spectacular work, A.K. Johnston, was born near Edinburgh in 1804 and apprenticed to an engraver after finishing his studies at the University of Edinburgh. In 1826 joined his brother (afterwards Sir William Johnston, lord provost of Edinburgh) in a printing and engraving business that became known as W. and A. K. Johnston.
