This beautiful mount is of a Hummel red deer stag. A Hummel is a rare genetic variation in which the males antlers fail to grow. To make up for not having antlers, the hummel stags are often heavier and use their size to still compete with antlered males. This is an unusual mount. On the plaque there is a name tag saying ‘Fasnakyle Homebeat 17-IX-34 16st. 10 LBS. P. M. S.’ So it was a large animal taken in 1934. There isn’t a labelled from the taxidermist but there is a small sticker on the back, placed by its previous owner saying ‘possibly by Murray of Carnforth’. For its age its in stunning condition. There are some signs of wear around the base where the neck joins the plaque – but it hasn’t deteriorated at all in the ten years I’ve had it. There is a scratch across its nose, presumable a wound from a fight while it was alive, and hidden in the hair there is a tear that the taxidermist had sawn up at the time of mounting – as can be seen on the pictures. It’s a beautiful piece of taxidermy, the detail in the modelling of the muzzle is second to none. The shields 50cm from top to bottom and projects 44cm from the wall. The piece is quite heavy – if you can collect it from Norwich that would be ideal. If not I’ll ship for £25.
