Hupa Karok (Karuk) Yurok Burden Basket Small Scale Vintage Pacific Northwest Indian Basket ~ Rare shape You are bidding on a Hupa Karok (Karuk) Yurok Burden Basket that is done in a small scale. It is the cone shaped basket on the right in the main photo. This basket is 7 1/2 inches tall and 7 inches wide. I have included a picture with the basket next to two others so you can get an idea of it size. It is sitting next to a hat basket and smaller basket. I do not believe this is a basket shape that is easy to find. I live in Northern California and I have seen hundreds of baskets but never one of this shape. As I am not an expert with respect to these baskets, I am not going to attempt to tell you about the year of its creation or its pattern. I was told by a tribal person that they were early 1900's . The person that gave me this information purchased one of the baskets in my collection for $1600. He said they were very well done ~ and by master weavers. Please rely on your own knowledge of these baskets or ask an expert to evaluate my posting and photos. What I can tell you is that these baskets have been in my family for years. My grandfathers aunt was a school teacher on a reservation in the early 1900's. She was given a variety of baskets and also the antique school bell.
