This is a CDV, 2 1/2" x 4", of Major Charles McLean Knox, 9th New York Cavalry. It is a full-standing image of McLean with his sword on his lefthand side while he rests his right hand on a studio chair. McLean wears a Hardee type hat which has the crossed sabers affixed to the front. At the botom of the front of the card is the pencil signature of Knox stating "Your brother Charles McLean Knox". Knox enrolled at Albany, New York on October 4, 1861 as Major, to serve for three years. He was discharged for disability October 8, 1863. The 9th New York Cavalry was part of the cavalry brigade of the Army of the Potomac and participated in most of the major battles with the Army of the Potomac including Winchester, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Trevilian Station, and the Appomattox Campaign. It lost 3 officers and 60 enlisted men killed and 5 officers and 29 enlisted men died of wounds, and 32 officers and 238 enlisted men wounded/recovered. 139 men were recorded as missing. The regiment was led by Co. William Sackett who was wounded at Trevilian Station and died June 11, 1864. The card is a trifle light but has no creases or spots. It is not backmarked. The corners are slightly worn. This image has been in my collection of 9th New York Cavalry images for many years, and the pencil ID is absolutely genuine. Major Knox may well have been with read more
