Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is the third issue from the venerable but still very well-respected Japanese MARU SPECIAL series: “Imperial Japanese Navy Battleships FUSO and YAMASHIRO, Volume 3, November 1975.” As most of you already know, the MARU SPECIAL series was published from 1975 to 1987 and each of the 135 volumes focused on a naval vessel, family of vessels, or campaign, most dealing with the Imperial Japanese Navy. The MARU SPECIALs offered a very popular combination of period photographs (some with rare detail), line drawings, color drawings in a few cases, and affordability. Although printed with Japanese text, many had English captions, but regardless of the difficulty of translation, the MARU SPECIALs remain very popular with historians and modelers and these out of-print gems are still frequently referenced. This particular MARU SPECIAL features the FUSO and YAMASHIRO, both laid down in Yokosuka in 1912 and 1913. Their design was basically a more powerful version of the KONGO class battlecruisers, and both were fitted with six twin 14 inch turrets. The two ships were the first in the IJN to accommodate oil-burning boilers which allowed greater speed and independence from coal.
