The General Purpose “Geep” as it was quickly dubbed saw the twilight of steam. First produced in 1954, over 4000 of these 17500 HP diesel electrics were built until 1960 when they were superseded by the slightly more powerful GP-18. While EMD BL-2 proved to be largely unsuccessful, the mistakes of that Branch Line switcher were corrected when EMD released the “Ugly Duckling” GP-7 to compete against the Alco RS-2 and RS-3 during the late 1940’s. The GP-9 class was largely based on the GP-7 class and was powered with the EMD 567 C diesel prime mover (Spotter’s Guide - the marker lights on the 9 were towards the edge of the nose whereas the GP-7 had the marker lights towards the middle top of each faceted nose edge).
