ILLUMINATED ITALIAN RENAISSANCE MANUSCRIPT LEAF, Northern Italy, probably Padova c. 1480 with the Crucifixion within laurel and gold frame on parchment. 318 x 220 mm, image area: 235 x 170 mm. Manoscritto miniato, manuscrit enluminé, illuminierte Handschrift. A single leaf, probably taken from a Missal. Colour losses, mainly at lower half of the picture, with prefatory drawing visible. One line of text at top of verso side, upper half of which has been cut. The style is totally cont with the best Italian renaissance illuminators from 1450-1500. The rendering of the body of Christ, together with the deep blue sky and the laurel frame, point to Padova and Ferrara rather than to Florence or Naples, but this is to be determined. The Paduan illuminator Giovanni Vendramin is particularly close in style. Cfr. the literature, e.g. La miniatura a Padova dal Medioevo al settecento, ed by Giordana Canova Mariani 1999.The Iconography shows the regular Crucifixion as a Calvary group with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist, with the skull of Adam at the foot of the cross. One anomaly though is that Christ turns his head to St John instead of the virgin. Shippping method determined together with winning bidder.
