Very Rare Seven-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration, Incised "Samuel Young," Belmont County, Ohio, origin, circa 1850, ovoid jug with open handles, decorated on the front and back with a brushed cobalt floral design. Handles decorated with horizontal stripes and one vertical stripe extending the length of each handle. Top of spout brushed over with cobalt. Incised on front "Samuel Young" along with a "7," both highlighted in cobalt. Ramsey lists Samuel Young as a potter active in Belmont County, Ohio, circa 1850 with no known maker"s mark. This jug is possibly the only known signed example of Young"s work. Excellent size and form. Mint condition. H 19 5/8".
