INDIA – Letter to Hezekiel CLARK , esquire, 1 st BATTALION ARTILLERY , proceeding by water to the Upper Provinces, having once contained three other letters. The letter seems at last have been returned to DUM DUM. DUM DUM, 22d July 1843. 2 pp. in-4. Several interesting POSTMARKS: DUM DUM (Giles Nr. 5, used 1838-1843) – CULNAH (today: KALNA - Giles Nr. 1, used from 1839) – HOOGHLY (Giles Houghly Nr. 2, used 1839-1846) – [H]OOGHLY (one line – not known in red by Giles – a similar one in brown was used according to Giles from 1785 to 1836), many Post Office notes that I can’t read in toto : “ With Major BLAKE’S FLEET DINAPORE ” – “ 21 HOOGHLY ” etc. etc. Interesting letter! DUM DUM Saturday 22d July 1843 7 p. m. My dear Clark I will not delay these letters a moment later than is absolutely necessary, for I feel certain tt one of them is from your dear son. They have first reached me and were amongst the very first tt have arrived. We have not yet received one of ours. I send them on to Mr Meale (?) as you directed, leaving it to his discretion either to forward them by COOLEE or by Da.. (?). Need I say tt “your place is being empty”? We feel your absence heavily. Yesterday dear Marian was .., but today thanks to our heavenly father she is better, and unites with us to affectionate to dearest Mrs Clark & yourself. We hope to hear read more
