Buffalo Shawl Woman This grandmother ((Unchi) is on her way to visit her grandchildren just a few lodges away. She wears her warm buffalo shawl that she tanned from a summer kill her husband made many years ago. Her grandchildren love to feel the warmth of the shawl after grandmother removes it from her shoulders. They also love to hear the stories of what a great hunter their grandfather was, all those many years ago. Buffalo Shawl Woman is a creation from Lakota Artist Diane Tells His Name. This doll is a replica of the second of three dolls of Diane's up for consideration for the National Museum of the American Indian to accession into their collection. Buffalo Shawl Woman is 7" tall and has a 6" armspan. She wears a genuine buffalo hide piece. Her dress is black micro-suede, trimmed with small shell discs and round white glass beads, sewn onto the dress. Her earrings are white bugle beads and black glass seed beads. Her necklace is white heart glass trade beads. In her hair is a genuine dove's feather in a gold tin cone. Her white horse tail hair is braided and tied with leather. On her feet are leather moccasins. Around her waist is a purple calico belt, denoting the European influence. Doll body parts are brown broadcloth, machine sewn and attached by hand sewing.
