ATTENTION EBAY: This item is TOTALLY INERT and never was intended to be a live round as indicated by the GOVERNMENT MARKING on top "DUMMY BOMB". It is filled with an inert substance and complies with all ebay rules.Offered is a New Old Stock Condition Viet Nam War Era BDU-28/B (BOMB,DUMMY UNIT-28/B) Dummy Cluster Bomb. The live version of this item was used in the Viet Nam era as an anti personnel bomb and a bunch of them would be packed inside of a clam shell type container, carried aloft by a bomber and then dropped at which time the container would open and scatter these over a large area. It is my understanding these dummy units were manufactured so that ordnance personnel could practice loading a CBU (cluster bomb unit) instead of using their live counterpart and then to drop them to see how they were dispersed. This unit is in new condition although it may have some light tarnish and dirt from 40 years of storage. This unit still has the "spoon" and retaining band holding the spring loaded stabilizing fins in place. The spoon was built to catch the air when the unit was dropped and fly off releasing the retaining band which would allow the stabilizing fins to spring into the open position. Once this spoon is released it is quite difficult to reassemble all of the fins and band back into place and that is why these are rarely read more
