Originally intaglios were carved in precious stones and were used to impress wax seals on letters and documents, giving a cameo or convex impression. Good quality intaglios were expensive and James Tassie from Scotland perfected a method of producing cheaper copies made from a glass paste. Around 1820 Paulo Paoletti and others made plaster copies or cameos of intaglios in Rome. These were often collected in book form and were bought as souvenirs of the Grand Tour. They portray Greek and Roman deities, architectural detail, mythological figures, paintings and antique statues. This is a modern reproduction, cast in plaster with a gilded paper edge. From my original antique collection these offer the closest possible alternative to the originals Height 1 1/2 inches Postage worldwide from Scotland $4 If buying more than one please wait for invoice as I combine shipping
