This is a rare opportunity to add to or start your own museum of Native American artifacts!! These were gathered in the 1960's and early 70's by Bert Witt,the founder of The Artic Circle Gallery in Los Angeles,which was devoted entirely to the exhibition and sale of sculpture by Inuit artists of the Canadian artic.Starting in 1967 the Witts traveled extensively where they visited many Inuit communities and formed personal acquaintances with native artists.Witt supported the Artic co-operative movement by purchasing art in each settlement He visited and through co-ops.Artists such as George Arluk, Karoo Ashevak,Peter Pitseolk,Jhonny Meeko Sr and Pudlo Pudlat.The large seal weighs 60 lbs and is very heavy these are not soap stone with the exception of the double bears.The natives traveled sometimes weeks over water and land to get to their traditional quarries where through a large amount of effort and a weather window of days before the ground freezes over,they extract the stone and haul it back to their homes.The different villages have different styles and stones serpentine etc.experts can tell where each item comes from and usually the artist by style.The whale bone is petrified and was once used to build the hunting shelters in generations past,as the new bone is to oily to carve.Please ask me any questions and I would be glad read more
