Evy and his Hawks meet the Oregon State Beavers in the second game of the season, winning a close one 14-13. As most HAWK FANS remember, prior to Hayden Fry coming onto the scene in Iowa City (1988), IOWA's long football history had a lot of failure and fumbles. Two bright spots in our HAWKEYE HERITAGE prior to Fry was 1939 when Coach Eddie Anderson and Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick shook the football world, and the other being the FOREST EVASHEVSKI years (1952-1960) when IOWA again exploded onto the national stage with power-house Winged-T-Offense Football. During EVASHEVSKI's tenure, IOWA won or tied for the Big Ten championship three times, representing the BIG TEN (and winning) in the 1957 and 1959 ROSE BOWLS. Evy, was a winner at Michigan, playing alongside some of the Wolverines all-time greats, and then brought that winning tradition to IOWA CITY in 1952, where he coached and served as Athletic Director during the 1950's and 1960's. Many say, he could have been easily elected governor of the state had he chosen to run!
